Review Holy Stone HS170 Predator Mini Drone/Quadcopter Good Choice for Drone Training

This mini-drone is a perfect gift for children, or for those interested in getting into remote control quadcopters. We wrote this Holy Stone HS170 review to give you a better idea of the features and performance of this amazing little quadcopter. This drone is of a surprisingly good quality considering the price point. It has 3 different modes for beginners to more advanced modes and really is a lot of fun to fly Included are a set of replacement blades in case you lose or break one with intensive flying. Each of the blades has a different angle to it, so be sure to install the replacement properly, otherwise the drone will not fly properly, and may even flip over. This drone has flexible landing feet to provide some cushioning when the quadcopter lands on purpose or accidentally. The feet are springy, so on landing don’t be surprised if the drone flips over. It also has curved propeller guards to soften impacts on the wall, and on the ceiling. These features increase the robustness of this little drone.

Flying the Drone

After installing the batteries into the remote control, the drone started to light up like a Christmas tree. It’s so silent that we’ve actually managed to pilot it inside a busy office without anyone noticing that it was there.

The drone responds to the controls quite well, and thanks to the headless mode, moving around the environment is pretty easy even for someone who never flew a drone. In fact, the controls are so smooth and responsive that it feels like operating an RC car.

As part of our Holy Stone Hs170 review, we’ve tried to see if the mini-drone can perform stunts as well. Being equipped with a 6-axis gyro stabilization system, the Hs170 performed a couple of 360 degrees spins and some evasions.

The tricky part was to pilot the drone back to “home base” for recharging. As the well begins to run dry, the Hs170 becomes harder and harder to control. We recommend landing the drone after 5 minutes of flight and to switch batteries.

Holy Stone Hs 170 Pros:
  • The Holy Stone Quadcopter is perfect for a first-time try out, especially for your kids. On top of its advanced flyer modes, it comes with three different modes for beginners. This, together with the highly responsive controls makes this drone quite easy to fly. For an amateur, it hardly takes any practice to get the hang of flying!
  • Excellent controls response time;
  • Decent flight time;
  • No FAA registration is required;
  • Can perform stunts;
  • Wind proofed, and shock proofed.
Holy Stone Hs 170 Cons:
  • Doesn’t have a camera;
  • Incessant beeping during headless mode can get annoying
  • The motor assembly can easily break;
  • Poor battery life;
  • No inscriptions on the remote control;
  • High recharge time.

You can fly this in moderate winds, but obviously come in for a landing when the winds speed picks up. It is a smaller quadcopter, and makes for a very good trainer.

Flight Performance

The quadcopter has a low rate which is great for flying indoors and tight spaces. The high rate opens up the agility and speed of the quadcopter and is amazing for outdoors. The screen will let you know which mode you are in.

This quadcopter flies very smoothly, and is very responsive to commands from the controller. Once you have it trimmed, it is very easy to keep quadcopter stable. This quadcopter has great maneuverability, and has no problem making decent bank turns.

A typical problem that quadcopters of comparable size have, is when you reduce the throttle, and the drone begins to descend, if you suddenly hit the throttle in an attempt to recover altitude, the drone often wobbles, and still crashes. This quadcopter does not suffer from this deficiency. The drone is very responsive to throttle commands.

The prop guards do add a bit of weight. They are good for indoor flying when you are first starting out, but you can eventually remove them once you gain some more experience.

The Syma X5C-1 is a quadcopter that is remarkably stable and a lot of fun to fly. It also makes an excellent trainer drone that you can crash over and over again without worrying too much. Add to that a 2MP camera and a price tag of less than $100 and it becomes no surprise why the X5C-1 is now a must-have quadcopter for both beginners and seasoned pilots.

It isn’t perfect, though, considering that it has a rather flimsy battery door that can be a bit hard to use. Its conventional x-shape body and rather ugly transmitter may not be features to shout about too but the X5C-1 more than makes up for its weaknesses with its reliability, affordability and not to forget, truly enjoyable flight performance.

  • Extremely easy to fly.
  • Built-in camera.
  • Adjustable trim settings.
  • Easy & Expert flight modes.
  • Remote camera trigger.
  • Under $100 dollars.
  • Camera mounted at odd angle.
  • Limited flight time.
  • No “true” HD version available.
  • Partial prop guards only.
  • Limited payload capabilities.

– Has everything you need to learn how to handle quadcopters
– Camera isn’t great but works
– 7 minutes of fly time
– remote control with the screen
– you can’t see what your camera is doing
– better consider a wi fi remote using your phone
– buy spare batteries

Great quadcopter to learn with. Just started myself and thought it was easy to get the hang of it with this quad. It also can take quite a beating. Crashed a lot and got it stuck in trees, and it also took a few free falls in the house and outdoors but nothing broke and still flys straight! The camera is fun to use but has low quality, which was expected from a 2mp cam. Video is also fun to use but it will drain the battery a little bit more quickly. Great buy for the price!! Lots of fun! If your starting in this hobby and don\’twant to spend too much money to try it out, you should definitely consider this quadcopter as a first choice!

Im very happy with my order, the drone is amazing!! very stable. The camera is HD, I was expecting a far worse quality but that’s not the case. I can see colours, faces and details!! I mean its even better than expected considering the price!!!!! It comes with everything included. I also bought the 4 slot charger and 4 extra batteries. Very useful!! I am very happy. I recommended it. It made a 26 year old “boy” very happy yestarday. 🙂
